David began umpiring in Perth, Western Australia at the age of 16, umpiring up to one level below the Premier Division (top division in Western Australia) and he continued at that level for 10 years.

At St Albans, he began umpiring again at the age of 50, but only on an ad hoc basis. In the UK he has passed his Level 1 exam (unassessed).
